SMLA Playing Time Policy

At Strathroy Minor Lacrosse Association (SMLA), we believe in providing a positive and fair playing experience for all our athletes. This Playing Time Policy is designed to set clear expectations for coaches, players, and parents regarding participation in games across our Competitive/Travel Teams and House League Teams.

1. Competitive / Travel Teams

For all SMLA Competitive/Travel Teams, at all age levels, the following playing time guidelines apply:

  • Equal Playing Time Goal:
Coaches will strive to play all players equally during regular zone games and exhibition games to ensure development and involvement of each athlete.

  • Special Situations:
During power play or penalty kill situations, or during critical moments of a Tournament Game or Provincial Game, playing time may be adjusted at the discretion of the coaching staff. These adjustments are based on strategy and game flow to increase the team's competitive edge.

  • Coach Discretion:
While equal playing time is the goal, certain game situations may require strategic decisions from the coaching staff. Coaches are encouraged to communicate their decisions and game strategies to players and parents to manage expectations.

2. House League Teams

For all SMLA House League Teams, at all age levels, the following playing time guidelines apply:

  • Commitment to Equal Playing Time:
Coaches will ensure all players receive equal playing time throughout the entire season, including during playoffs and tournaments. The focus of House League is on player development, fun, and ensuring every athlete has the opportunity to participate fully.

  • Consistency Across the Season:
This equal playing time approach applies throughout the regular season and extends to any end-of-season tournaments or playoff games. The goal is to provide a consistent, inclusive experience for all participants.

General Notes for All Teams:

  • Player Development Focus:
The priority of SMLA is to develop well-rounded athletes who feel engaged and valued. Playing time decisions are made with player development and team dynamics in mind.

  • Communication:
Coaches are encouraged to maintain open communication with players and parents about playing time expectations, especially in competitive scenarios where adjustments may be necessary.

  • Adherence to Policy:
All SMLA teams are required to follow this Playing Time Policy. Coaches are expected to apply these guidelines consistently to foster a positive team environment.

If you have any questions about this policy or need further clarification, please reach out to the SMLA President or Vice President.
